Naomi Davis, proud granddaughter of Mississippi sharecroppers, takes us back in time when 6 million African Americans voted with their feet and left the farm towns they loved, moving “upsouth” to cities for freedom and economic opportunity. They left behind the terror of burning crosses, stolen land, lynching, and rape… but brought with them sweet memories and the wisdom of farm and family. This was America’s Great Migration, the most pivotal story in our nation’s history. What did these travelers bring with them, who oft-times left with nothing but box lunches and a luggage? Learn about that journey and how their love of land came tenderly along in their packets of seeds, recipe cards, and field training. Hear the story of one child of master farmers newly planted in the Black Metropolis, remembering home in new traditions she would harvest in her Victory Garden for decades to come. See inside her suitcase!
